TAP: What Your Knowledge Community is Doing for You

Dear Members of the Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community (TAP):

Thank you for your participation in TAP. Please continue to bring your ideas, comments and criticism to the TAP KC Advisory Group so that we can expand the value TAP brings to AIA members. We welcome your contributions.

I am honored and energized to serve as 2008 chair of the TAP committee. We look forward to building on the excellent work of Kristine Fallon, FAIA (2007 chair), past chairs Stephen Hagan, FAIA, and Jim Bedrick, AIA, and a long line of leaders reaching back to 1994, by expanding this work with material relevant in the context of our current and emerging practice needs.

This year we will add a special focus on use of design and information technologies in support of Eco-responsible design: Writings and presentations will raise awareness, workshops will help build programs for education and implementation, and case studies will demonstrate how the inevitable technologies promoted over the past five years (BIM, Collaboration and Interoperability) can be used and are being used to improve the quality of built environments. Our 2008 conference, developed in collaboration with AIA Integrated Practice Discussion Group, AIA Committee on Building Science and Performance and the AIA Committee on the Environment, includes many presentations and workshops treating green design, use of technologies to inform the design process, and incorporation of technology into higher and continuing education programs. We hope to see many of you in Boston this May at the 2008 conference (details below).

Overview of TAP KC accomplishments in 2007:

The 3rd Annual BIM Awards highlighted the first part of 2007 for TAP. Nine projects were honored, each showcasing BIM at its best. Visit the August 24th AIArchitect for a full listing and details on each project.

TAP continued collaboration within the AIA, including specific efforts with the Educator/Practitioner Network working together on 2007 Cranbrook, and the Integrated Project Delivery Discussion Group helping to compose the AIA response to National BIM Standard (NBIMS) draft version. TAP AG members also participated in a number of local component activities.

TAP co-sponsored a December 2007 Conference, The Future of Professional Practice, with the Practice Management KC; many other AIA KCs and components, including Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Delaware, Small Project Practitioners, Design/ Build, Integrated Practice and the Educator/ Practitioner Network participated. The event was a tremendous success, with over 300 attendees attending some 35+ sessions and keynotes. The event drew together a uniquely diverse constituency that offered many perspectives on directions for the profession. Look for conference materials, including speaker presentations and downloadable presentations of sessions, at the Conference Report.

Following the fall conference, TAP convened Building Connections – The 4th Congress on Digital Collaboration in the Building Industry. The Building Connections initiative, which includes an annual Congress and a website, has been an effective program bringing together groups working on data interchange standards for AEC. Building Connections provides a neutral and open forum where governmental organizations and privately funded initiatives share knowledge and organize their efforts.

Our electronic newsletter – EDGES (and our two websites - www.aia.org/tap and www.building-connections.info) remain our primary publication mechanisms for Knowledge Delivery. 3 issues of EDGES were published in 2007, including some great examples of current work and details regarding our built environment.

Moving forward in 2008:

The Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community Advisory Group extends special thanks to James Bedrick, AIA, of Webcor Builders, for his tremendous leadership and contributions to TAP. Jim’s tenure with the TAP KC AG is complete; he is now serving on the AIA Board Knowledge Committee. We look forward to his continued enthusiasm and insights and thank him for his integral role over the past 5 years.

This year we welcome our newest member, Mike Kenig, Allied AIA, of Holder Construction Company, who continues our direct liaison with builders. Our 2008 TAP Knowledge Community Advisory Group members are:

  • Tony Rinella, Associate AIA, Anshen & Allen Architects - 2008 Chair
  • Charles Eastman, Georgia Institute of Technology College of Architecture
  • Kristine K. Fallon, FAIA, Kristine Fallon Associates, Inc. - 2007 Chair
  • Stephen Hagan, FAIA, CCM, GSA, PBS Project Knowledge Center - 2006 Chair
  • Mike Kenig, Allied AIA, of Holder Construction Company

It is with tremendous excitement that we can assure you 2008 will provide TAP members with even more value than last year:

Submissions for the 4th Annual BIM Awards have been collected, and the jury process is under way. Winners will be announced during our 2-day conference preceding the 2008 AIA Convention in May.

We invite everyone to attend Change the World: Harnessing BIM Technology and Integrated Practice Delivery for Sustainable Design, to be held May 13-14, 2008 in Boston. This event is almost sold out, so we encourage you to register soon. Our industry is changing swiftly in response to natural, cultural, and economic forces. Trends in design tools, building technology, construction delivery methods, and sustainable practice are converging toward a common path. Join us for this two-day conference, immediately preceding the AIA 2008 National Convention, which will provide a well-rounded exploration of the application of building information modeling (BIM)-related technologies, integrated project delivery, advanced design, and building technologies to achieve sustainable practices. The conference is co-sponsored by the AIA Integrated Practice Discussion Group, with the support of the AIA Committee on Building Science and Performance and the AIA Committee on the Environment.

We are in the initial stages of planning the 5th annual Building Connections Congress – stay tuned for more details. Be sure to check back to the Building Connections website, as updates and information are added frequently. We also invite you to keep an eye out for TAP Advisory Group members speaking at your local events. We visited AIA in Omaha Nebraska last month, and more speaking engagements are on the calendar.

We will continue to build upon the success of the EDGES, and encourage everyone to take the time to open and read each issue. We are excited to announce that Michael Tardif, AIA, will be the 2008 Editor. We also encourage you to submit articles, case studies or other information. Look for a call for information in each issue.

We encourage everyone to become engaged with TAP activities. Contact us to contribute to publications, volunteer to help with conferences and special projects, or to begin a TAP group in your local component. Bringing value to TAP members is the primary goal of TAP KC, and the participation of TAP members is our primary asset in achieving this goal.

If you have any questions or comments, or wish to become more involved in TAP, please email tap@aia.org.

Sincerely,

Tony Rinella, Associate AIA - 2008 Chair
