Partners
The Center for Communities by Design builds coalitions and works with many organizations to promote livable communities. Some of our partners include:

American Architectural Foundation (AAF)
The AAF's purpose is to help people understand the importance of architecture in their lives and then use that understanding to enrich their lives and transform their communities. Resources include a series of videotapes on the impact of good design on a community's quality of life: Block by Block: Reclaiming Neighborhoods by Design; Becoming Good Neighbors: Enriching America's Communities by Design; and Back from the Brink: Saving America's Cities by Design.

American Planning Association (APA)
The APA is a nonprofit public interest and research organization committed to urban, suburban, regional, and rural planning. The APA and its professional institute, the American Institute of Certified Planners, promote the art and science of planning to meet the needs of people and society.

American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)
The ASLA is the national professional association representing landscape architects. ASLA promotes the landscape architecture profession and advances the practice through advocacy, education, communication and fellowship.

The Enterprise Foundation 
The Enterprise Foundation has partnered with the AIA, the Natural Resources Defense Council and others on the Green Communities initiative to ensure sustainable, smart and healthy homes and neighborhoods for Americans with limited incomes.
 
International Downtown Association (IDA)
The IDA promotes and guides the development of vibrant, healthy urban centers that anchor towns, cities, and regions, with information resources, news, case studies, legislation tracking, and other services.

Mayor's Institute on City Design (MICD)
The MICD's mission is to improve the design and livability of America's cities through their chief elected leaders: their mayors. The program is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), established in 1986 and now administered by the American Architectural Foundation in partnership with the NEA and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) 
The NAHB is a federation of more than 800 state and local builders associations throughout the United States. This trade association enhances the climate for housing and the building industry and promotes policies that will keep housing a national priority. Chief among NAHB's goals is providing and expanding opportunities for all consumers to have safe, decent, and affordable housing.

National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) 
NAR strives to be the collective force influencing and shaping the real estate industry. Working on behalf of America's property owners, NAR facilitates professional development, research, and exchange of information among its members and to the public and government to preserve the free enterprise system and the right to own, use, and transfer real property.

Project for Public Spaces (PPS) 
PPS creates and sustains public places with technical assistance, research, and education, for the benefit of communities. The Center for Communities by Design is working with PPS on the Transportation and Livable Communities Consortium and the Better Buildings partnership.

This website is a service of the Smart Growth Network.  It includes summaries of and links to news articles, reports, calendar of events, and other resources.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Smart Growth Program
EPA's Smart Growth Program promotes smart growth through grants, publications, an annual Smart Growth Achievement awards program, and a database of state, regional, and local regulations.

Urban Land Institute(ULI)
ULI's mission is to provide responsible leadership in the use of land in order to enhance the total environment. To increase its influence on land-use policy and practice, the Institute communicates best practices and provides relevant and current information about land use and real estate development to all its members and stakeholders.

Best Practices in Natural Hazards Planning and Mitigation PDF 
Report from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Office of Smart Growth on best practices in reconciling new growth and development in areas that are prone to a variety of natural hazard threats.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
Department of Homeland Security was established in 2002 to provide the unifying core for the vast national network of organizations and institutions involved in efforts to secure the nation. DHS's Ready.gov website presents information on some of the things you can do to prepare for both a natural or man-made emergency.

Disaster Help
A portal where the public can easily access disaster information and services provided by government agencies and non-governmental organizations, part of the federal Disaster Management Egov Initiative. Comprehensive links and other excellent resources.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Reading Room
Includes: archives; FEMA facts; agency directives, forms and manuals; information technology; legal; maps; mitigation; National Flood Insurance Program; Office of Financial Management; preparedness and training; Project Impact; response and recovery; and other topics.

Firewise
Educational information for people who live or vacation in fire-prone areas of the United States to acquaint them with wildland fire protection.

Professional association of state emergency management directors; includes a resource library.

Community Associations Institute (CAI)
CAI is a nonprofit association that educates and supports America's 231,000 residential condominium, cooperative, and homeowner associations, as well as related professionals and service providers. The Institute is dedicated to fostering vibrant, responsive, competent community associations that promote harmony, community, and responsible leadership.

Local Government Commission (LGC)
This nonprofit, nonpartisan, membership organization provides technical assistance and networking to local elected officials and other dedicated community leaders who are working to create healthy, walkable, and resource-efficient communities. The LGC sponsors the annual New Partners for Smart Growth Conference.

National Charrette Institute
Teaches and facilitates charrettes and encourages community involvement in debating, creating, and implementing development and design strategies.

Sustainable Communities Network
This website provides links to information sources related to healthy, vital and sustainable communities. Its goal is to increase the visibility of what strategies have worked for other communities, and to pormote a lively exchange of information to help create community sustainability in both urban and rural areas.

The Trust for Public Land

Fellowships

Center for Urban Redevelopment Excellence at the University of Pennsylvania
This program trains and supports the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs who will transform neighborhoods and cities. Ten highly motivated individuals are selected each year to become CURExPenn Fellows and receive knowledge and skill development from leading experts in the field and on-the-job experience at top urban redevelopment organizations nationwide.

Frederick P. Rose Architectural Fellowship
The Frederick P. Rose Architectural Fellowship was established in 1999 by The Enterprise Foundation, a national nonprofit housing and community development organization. The Fellowship creates partnerships between new architects and community-based organizations to direct the skills and passions of the architects in the service of low and moderate-income communities. The Fellowship is designed to promote architectural and community design in low-income communities and encourages architects to become lifelong leaders in public service and community development.

The Loeb Fellowship
This fellowship offers ten annual postprofessional awards for independent study at Harvard University. It is a unique opportunity to nurture the leadership potential of the most promising men and women in design and other professions related to the built and natural environment.
