Dear Members of the Interior Architecture Knowledge Community
(INT):
As the 2008 chair, I would like to thank you for your continued
membership with INT.
I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to speed on
INTs accomplishments in 2007, and inform you of our plans for
this year:
The Interior Architecture Advisory Group is very proud of its
newest member resource, the quarterly Interior Architecture
Newsletter. This has become our primary communication
device with KC members, as it collects and disseminates knowledge
relevant to Interior Architecture and provides a mechanism to
increase outreach. If you missed any of the issues, please visit
the INT website to review.
2007 was also a banner year for the INT Speaking Tour.
Current and past Advisory Group members traveled throughout the
country, stopping at local AIA Component Conferences and Allied
Organizations events presenting a variety of sessions dealing with
Interior Architecture. The topics included:
-
Design as a Business
-
How to Work with an Interior Designer
-
Grow Your Practice: the Interior Advantage
-
FF&E for Dummies
-
Codes for Interior Architects
The INT Advisory Group worked closely with the IIDA on a special
issue of their print publication, Perspectives, which
was sent to you as an INT member. This issue featured a panel
interview, which included 2007 INT Chair Richard Logan, AIA.
For the fourth consecutive year, we, along with the Committee on
the Environment, joined with CoreNet Global and the International
Interior Design Association (IIDA) to present the annual
Sustainability Leadership Awards for Design and Development
at the CoreNet Global Summit in Denver. CoreNet Global is an
association for corporate real estate executives. There were a
record number of nominations for the 2007 award, signifying the
dramatic increase in the awareness and use of sustainable practices
by global for-profit and nonprofit organizations.
2007 was clearly a year full of success, and we hope the value you
received as a member of the INT was just as exciting.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Kevin
Sneed, AIA, IIDA, LEED AP, of OTJ Architects, for his tremendous
leadership and efforts on the INT Advisory Group. Kevin has
completed his 5-year tenure on the AG and has stepped down from his
official role. We look forward to his continued enthusiasm and
insights, and thank him for his integral role over the past 5
years.
As we begin 2008, I welcome our newest member, Steven McCollum,
AIA, of Gary Lee Partners, to the INT Advisory Group. Steve joins
the following other members of the Interior Architecture Knowledge
Community and recent past chairs:
John Jessen, AIA, IIDA, NCARB - 2008 Chair
Richard Logan, AIA 2007 Chair
Tim Hawk, AIA 2009 Chair
Annie Chu, AIA
Angie Lee, FAIA 2003 Chair
Hank Hildebrandt, AIA 2004 Chair
Diana Brenner, FAIA 2005 Chair
It provides me with tremendous excitement to assure you that 2008
will provide INT members with even more value than last year!
We will continue to build upon the success of the Interior Architecture
Newsletter, and encourage everyone to take the time to open
and read each issue. We also encourage you to submit articles, case
studies or other information. Look for a call for information in
each issue. We will also work hard to make the Interiors website a valued,
cant live without resource.
INT will continue its open dialogue with Allied
Organizations such as IIDA, ASID, and IFMA in order to enable
and facilitate collaboration among practitioners and allied
professionals.
A goal for 2008 is to engage with and create additional local
component Interior Architecture groups. In building local
Interior Architecture committees, we will increase awareness and
enhance our delivery of knowledge. We plan to engage with three
current local components as well as build three new local
committees in 2008. If you have an active group at your local
component, or have interest in starting a group, please contact us
at interiors@aia.org.
Plans are already underway for Interior Architecture
presentations to occur at a local/regional component event in
your neighborhood, so please keep your eyes open for that. Also in
2008 we plan to hold our first Interior Architecture
Webinar. Ken Wilson, the newest INT Subcommittee member, is in
the early stages of putting together a panel to discuss Sustainable
Interiors. This webinar, to be held in collaboration with several
other AIA Knowledge Communities, is tentatively scheduled for late
spring 2008.
Finally, 2008 will also see our publication, Significant
Interiors, reach the shelves. This book highlights trends
in Interior Architecture using the AIA Honors and Awards for
Interior Architecture winners from 2000 to 2004. This publication,
which is being published by IMAGES, will be released prior to the
AIA Convention in Boston.
I hope you can tell from this email how excited I am to build upon
the past success of the INT. The Advisory Group cannot do this
alone, however, and we encourage everyone to become engaged in some
fashion.
If you have any questions or comments, or wish to become more
involved in INT, please email interiors@aia.org.
Sincerely,
John Jessen, AIA, IIDA, NCARB - 2008 Chair
