Case Study: Riverbend Church

Riverbend Church is a growing Christian church in Austin, Texas. The form of the church is generated by the unique site topography as well the congregation’s desire for an inspiring contemporary design. The site is defined by steep slopes, wooded hills, and a deep ravine. The worship space follows the site contours by stepping down towards an open platform. A large arched window allows the sanctuary space to flow to the ravine beyond. By moving down into the sanctuary the congregants are also moving down the hill making a strong physical connection to the site. The sanctuary seating surrounds the platform keeping every person within 90 feet of the altar and oriented towards the view of the ravine. The connection to the site is reinforced by the use of native materials such as limestone and wood throughout the building. With views of the worship leaders, fellow congregants, and landscape beyond all the elements that define the church are brought together in the sanctuary.

The sanctuary employs technology to support a variety of worship and performance types. Music and theatrical performances during worship are supported by the extensive lighting and sound systems. Services are broadcast worldwide through the full television broadcast and production facilities. The technology also supports the outreach ministry by providing a performance space for public concerts by popular artists and the Austin Symphony Pops. A connection to the surrounding community is also made through a commitment to local artists. One percent of the construction budget was set aside to commission artwork over time with several pieces having been installed throughout the building already.
